Teaching critical analysis does more than help meet curricular standards and create informed citizens. Children are bombarded daily with messages that focus on attaining perfection: The prefect outfit, the perfect body, the perfect smile, the perfect student. They are told their value can be measured...what’s your height, your weight, your BMI, your score on a standardized test. Are your teeth white enough, are your eyes big enough, is your waist small enough? They compare their ever growing and changing bodies to those they see in the media. Unfortunately, this level of external beauty is not even obtainable by most models advertised as “ideal.” Only 1% of the population is naturally extremely thin. For everyone else, attempting to attain this ideal will come with the high cost of poor health outcomes and a life long struggle against their own bodies.
